Installation view at 596 Markham Street (the former David Mirvish Books on Art), Toronto. Salvaged billboards, thread, metal, thumbtacks, industrial fans, 50' x 47' x 15', 2016. Installed as part of Toronto's 2016 Nuit Blanche, outdoor salvaged billboards are re-composed and retro-fitted for the exact interior dimensions of David Mirvish Books before the site, part of Mirvish Village, is redeveloped in 2017. Concealed industrial fans animate the sliced and layered billboards, enhancing an optical effect inspired by the 50 foot long Frank Stella painting, Damascus Gate (1970) that once hung on the back wall of the bookstore and former gallery space. What appears to be the white walls of a gallery space here are in fact the white backsides of two largescale billboards.
